A local cab driver was killed Saturday morning when a car slid off the road and slammed into the driver's side of his vehicle.
Geoffriau Powell, 38, was stopped at a gas station on Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro when the crash happened just after 6 a.m.
The impact killed Powell.
The driver of the other vehicle, 25-year-old Evan Childress, was arrested and charged with his third DUI, driving on a restricted license and vehicular homicide.
Powell was a driver for Allied Cab Company in Nashville. A spokesperson with the business said he had been with the company since 2006.
"He was a great father, definitely a great father and a friend that everybody could die for," close friend Ermias Lupai told Nashville's News 2. "He was certainly a man of character. He had a lot of qualities about him that a friend should have."
Powell was married and had seven children, including his youngest child, a one-year-old.
"He loved his children. He always talked about his children," Lupai recalled.
A family member told Nashville's News 2 that Powell often took veterans to and from medical appointments and was on his way to work Saturday morning when the accident occurred.
A fund is being set up to help Powell's widow and children, however information was not immediately released.
Visitation for Powell will be held Friday from Noon to 2 p.m. with the funeral to follow at the Madison Funeral Home on Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison.
Childress was booked into the Rutherford County jail on a $55,000 bond and has since been released.
