KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

Sports Illustrated is reporting that Charlie Strong turned down an offer from the University of Tennessee and will stay at Louisville.

An official announcement from the team and Strong is as expected as early as Thursday.

Though the contract is not yet finalized, Sports Illustrated reports it is a "long-term extension" and will place Strong "in the top echelon of coaches in the ACC."

Initial reports indicated that Tennessee reportedly made Strong an offer and Louisville countered only to have the Volunteers come back with an even better package some time earlier Wednesday afternoon.

Reports were Athletic Director Dave Hart even boarded a plane for Louisville Wednesday afternoon, only to be turned around.

Strong led the Cardinals to a 10-2 season and a birth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Tennessee fired head coach Derek Dooley last month.

Nashville's News 2 is closely following this story and will provide updates as they become available.
