Palace says Prince William, Kate Middleton expecting 1st child

LONDON (AP) - It's the news British royal watchers have been waiting for: Prince William's wife, Kate, is expecting an heir to the throne.

She's also suffering from severe morning sickness.

In announcing the pregnancy Monday, St. James's Palace said the Duchess of Cambridge is in a London hospital with her husband at her side. Officials say she's being treated for a potentially dangerous type of morning sickness where vomiting is so severe no food or liquid can be kept down. She is expected to remain hospitalized for several days and will need a period of rest afterward.

The palace did not say how far along the pregnancy is, only that it has not yet reached the 12-week mark.

The news came just days after the 30-year-old duchess, on a royal appearance, played field hockey with schoolchildren at her former school.

The couple's first child will be third in line to take the throne, behind Prince William and William's father, Prince Charles.

The palace says the royal family is "delighted" by the news and British Prime Minister David Cameron says the couple will make "absolutely brilliant parents."
