COLUMBIA, Tenn. -
A Maury County mother and her son are trying to get back on their feet as the holidays approach after their home was destroyed in a fire on Monday.
The fire broke out at the family's trailer on Buck Daniels Road as Marie Wayne and her three-year-old son Davin were decorating their home for Christmas and making cookies.
"We had candles lit and I guess a candle fell," Wayne told Nashville's News 2 Investigates.
Wayne said her home was immediately engulfed by flames.
"The smoke was so bad it knocked me to my knees," Wayne said. "It was so thick and musky. I was calling for the animals and I couldn't do anything. It was too thick."
Wayne and her toddler son were able to escape the home without injury, however they lost their pets, a Jack Russell named Lucy and three cats in the blaze.
"[Lucy] and Davin were very close," Wayne said. "We miss her a lot."
The Wayne family lost all of their belongings in the fire.
"Never think something won't happen, anything can happen and it can happen to anybody. I hate it," Wayne said.
Donations for the family are being accepted at the Maury Farmers Co-op located on 423 Westover Drive in Columbia.
