SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. -

A Robertson County woman is dead following an argument with her stepfather Monday evening at the family's Springfield home.

Springfield police responded to the home on Shelby Lynn Drive around 6:30 p.m. to find Mackenzie Gibson with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

Gibson, 22, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died a few hours later, around 10:15 p.m.

During the course of their investigation, police determined Gibson was shot by her stepfather, Thomas Bunn, during an argument.

"It escalated to where there was a baseball bat and a knife and eventually there was a shot fired from a handgun," Springfield Police Chief David Thompson said, adding, "Allegedly she had the baseball bat and then also she picked up a knife threatening to kill her stepfather."

Nashville's News 2 spoke with Gibson's friends Kierra Payne and Keona Carr who said they were shocked to learn about their friend's death.

"She just brightened up your day, no matter who you were," she said.

Carr added that Gibson often argued with her stepfather.

"They always had problems always them too. They always stayed into it," she said.

Charges were not immediately filed against Bunn.

"We want to make sure we've got the facts together and we've got our investigation complete so we can make the right decisions," Thompson said.

The case remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department.  The results will be presented to the district attorney general for review.
