Former candidate charged with domestic assault

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A former Republican congressional candidate who raised eyebrows with a Facebook post in September has been arrested on a domestic assault charge.

The Tennessean cited a police affidavit in reporting Brad Staats was arrested Sunday after his wife called police and said he struck her in the face. The police report noted a red mark on Bethany Staats' left cheek and said it was consistent with her statement.

Brad Staats said the couple argued and he pushed his wife down on a bed and left.

Staats lost to incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper of Nashville on Nov. 6.

He posted a photo of a handgun and the words, "Welcome to Tennessee, Mr. Obama" on Facebook, saying it wasn't a threat, but support of the Second Amendment.
