Potential Walmart opening has Murfreesboro residents split

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

On Black Friday the nation's largest retailer is already thinking about how it can double its stores in rapidly growing Murfreesboro.

The Rutherford County city of 100,000 has two Walmart stores now, but could have four in a few years.

A site plan for another Walmart has just been approved by the Murfreesboro Planning Commission for S. Church Street and Joe B. Jackson Parkway, and a fourth Walmart is in the works for Memorial Boulevard in front of the city's airport.

"I think it would just increase traffic," Siegel High student Carlton House told Nashville's News 2. "I live over there and we have enough already."

His buddy Josh Dixon saw things differently.

"It would definitely save on gas," he said.

Graham Hutcheson says he lives in the area of the proposed SuperCenter near the airport.

"We need the retail," he said.

For its part, Walmart touts the SuperCenter as creating 300 new jobs, not counting construction.

No public hearing is required for Walmart's Memorial Boulevard site because it already has been zoned for commercial development according to city officials, but they plan a meeting for the public to review the plans because of the expected impact on the area.

The meeting is scheduled for December 10 at the SportsComm complex on Memorial Blvd.

Shoppers out for Black Friday at the Walmart near l-24 and N. Thompson Lane were generally receptive, but expressed concern about more traffic congestion.
