BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -

Area firefighters are reminding Tennesseans to take precautions if they are planning to fry a turkey on Thanksgiving.

Each year nationwide five people are killed and 60 others are injured from turkey fryers.

Nashville's News 2 spent time with Brentwood firefighters on Thursday who showed us just how easy it is to make a dangerous mistake such as using a frozen turkey or too much oil.

"Nobody is immune to something like this," Lt. Brian Collins Brentwood Fire and Rescue said.

In years past, an Antioch home was heavily damaged after the homeowner left the turkey fryer unattended. More than 30% of the home sustained damage in the quick moving blaze.

Firefighters recommend those using a turkey fryer have a dry chem extinguisher nearby in the event a fire sparks, adding that using an extinguisher that is water based or water alone with make the fire worse.

Officials say the largest number of fires all year occur on Thanksgiving Day. Each year more than 4,000 fires are reported, causing nearly $27 million in property damage.
