Giles County teacher, coach accused of statutory rape

LYNNVILLE, Tenn. -

A teacher and coach at a Giles County school has been indicted on two counts of statutory rape.

According to a report in the Columbia Daily Herald, Joseph Dunavant is accused of engaging in a sexual act with a 17-year-old female student.

The alleged incidents are said to have occurred in late September and early October.

An investigation against the 24-year-old teacher began after school administration suspected he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student at Richland School.

Dunavant is said to have turned himself into authorities at the Giles County jail. He has since been released on a $2,500 bond.
