Teen dies from injuries sustained in robbery attempt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

An 18-year-old shot just after Midnight Tuesday in north Nashville has died from his injuries.

Laron Owens was shot during a robbery attempt in the 3300 block of Curtis Street in Bordeaux.

Police said Owens was the rear passenger in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am when a gunman approached, made robbery demands and opened fire.

Owens was shot in the head and stomach. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died Tuesday afternoon.

The front seat passenger, Derry en Doss, 22, was struck in the shoulder by the gunfire.  He has since been treated and released.

The driver, Leona Harris, 19, was not hit by the gunfire and uninjured.

Police said prior to the shooting, a group of young men had reportedly been standing outside the car.

Authorities reported there was an odor of marijuana in the air when they arrived on the scene.

Police recovered a gun from a nearby trash can.

A K9 unit attempted to locate the suspect, but the search was unsuccessful.

A description of the suspect was vague, but investigators told Nashville's News 2 the suspect is a black male with a slender build. He is approximately six feet tall.
