CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

Clarksville police charged a man with animal cruelty after a horse was found in poor condition and had to be euthanized.

Police said a passerby notified them after they saw the animal laying in the same spot for two days.

When officers arrived to the 2300 block of Whitfield Road the horse was laying on its side unable to stand.

Officers reported the ground was compacted around the animal where it appeared as though the horse had made repeated attempts to get up.

Food was brought to the horse, which was malnourished, in an effort to help it regain enough strength to stand.

A veterinarian assessed the horse and determined there were several medical issues and it suffered from long term nutritional deficiencies.

The horse was euthanized.

Timothy Decent was taken into police custody and charged with cruelty to animals.

Decent remains jailed on $10,000 bond.
