Funeral for TSU player Wayne Jones to be held Thursday night
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The funeral for a freshman walk-on football player for Tennessee State University will be held in Nashville on Thursday night.
William Wayne Jones III died after collapsing at football last Wednesday afternoon.
School officials said Jones passed out and became unresponsive just after practice started. The university said Jones had no known health problems.
"He was doing a simple backpedal drill, he backpedaled, the ball was thrown to him, he caught it, then while bringing the ball back to the coach and he collapsed and that is as far as I can go into it," said Tennessee State head football coach Rod Reed last week in a news conference.
Visitation for Jones will be help from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church located on Acklen Avenue with the funeral immediately following.
Jones, who graduated last spring from Smyrna High School, will be buried on Friday.
