I-24 at I-40 reopens after big rig overturns

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 24, where the highway merges with Interstate 40, has reopened Tuesday afternoon after a tractor trailer overturned earlier in the day.

The crash was reported just east of downtown shortly before 11 a.m.

Police on the scene told Nashville's News 2 the truck was traveling east on I-40 and lost control around the curve.

The truck slid across the eastbound lanes of both I-40 and I-24 and struck a guardrail.

The impact caused the diesel fuel tank to split open, spilling several gallons of fuel onto the median.

According to officials, the semi-truck's front tire got caught on the guardrail keeping it from continuing on into westbound lanes of travel.

The driver was out of the truck when crews arrived on the scene and was uninjured.

Interstate 24 East was shutdown at Shelby Avenue while crews worked the scene.

Traffic on Interstate 40 East leaving downtown was also slow due to the accident.

The roadway reopened around 3 p.m.
