Police work with churches to trade unwanted guns for gift cards

Metro police and area churches are offering to trade gift cards for unwanted guns this weekend.

The event will be held at Tusculum Hills Baptist Church on Saturday from 8 a.m. to Noon.

Davidson County citizens will be able to safely exchange real firearms for $25 Dollar General gift cards with no questions asked.

There is a limit of one gift card per person or two gift cards per family.

The gift cards can be used at Dollar General Stores to purchase any items, including groceries, gifts and other holiday supplies.

"There is no better time than a week before Thanksgiving for parents, grandparents and other family members to think about any firearms that are in poor working condition or those at risk of falling into the wrong hands, particularly unsupervised young people," Chief Steve Anderson said.

He added, "I applaud Dollar General for joining with us to enhance Nashville's safety, while, at the same time, helping families with Thanksgiving meal preparations."

Pastor Michael Joyner, pastor of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church is a Metro police chaplain and has assisted in three previous programs.

He told Nashville's News 2 he was surprised at the number of guns people brought in.

"Handguns, rifles sawed offs, we've gotten some illegal guns in. But once again, no questions asked," he said.

Deputy Chief Todd Henry added there is no reason for anyone to question the intentions of the police department and the program.

"You'll hand it to a police officer, he'll tag it and mark it, we don't ask for any id of any sort. We just want to make sure that weapon is off the streets and not going to harm anybody."

Tusculum Hills Baptist Church is located at 4930 Nolensville Pike.
