A 46-year-old woman was seriously injured Wednesday evening after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver in north Nashville.
The woman, Sharon Higgins, was hit on 10th Avenue North at Jefferson Street around 5:20 p.m. and taken to at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was last listed in critical but stable condition.
Police said Higgins was residing at a Union Rescue Mission facility. She smelled strongly of alcohol but nevertheless it is unclear why the pickup truck, described as white or light beige, struck her in a well-lit area and fled.
"The victim smelled of alcohol. Intoxication could have played a role in this on the victim's behalf. Again we don't know anything about the driver, so we haven't been able to interview that individual. Hopefully they will call later on," Metro police Sgt. Mark Denton told News 2.
Witnesses reported that the truck, which was pulling a long trailer with one taillight out, stopped briefly after striking Higgins, but then took off traveling south on 10th Avenue.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the pickup truck or its driver is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
