Maury County deputies are warning elderly residents of a driveway scam artist that may be in the area. Seventy-four-year-old Eleanor Houge and her 83-year-old husband are among the victims taken advantage of by 21-year-old Johnny Wells. The elderly couple paid nearly $2,000 for a driveway paving job that was not done correctly. "He got all finished and told me the price and I said I had no idea that it would be that much," she said. Eleanor told Nashville's News 2 Investigates Wells was a fast talker and very persuasive in his sales pitch."He came up here and he was very persuasive," she said. According to investigators, Wells used a fake name on the contract and then misspelled the same name on a business card he left behind at the Houge's home. Eleanor said she has since called the company several times, but has never received an answer. She also told Nashville's News 2 Investigates that the Nashville Better Business Bureau does not have a record of the company on file."You feel stupid after it is all finished with and you realize you got ripped off," Eleanor said. "I should have realized this guy was not honest, but you cannot tell." Authorities said Wells was charged in Georgia after he allegedly coerced an 80-year-old man into writing him an $8,000 check of an unsatisfactory driveway job. Anyone with information on Wells or dealing with him is urged to contact the Maury County Sheriff's Office at 931-381-4900.
