Former license clerk pleads guilty to bribery

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A former state drivers' service center employee has pleaded guilty to taking bribes to issue drivers licenses.

The Tennessean reported 54-year-old Larry Murphy of Nashville entered his plea Tuesday in U.S. District Court to bribery counts.

Judge Kevin Sharp will sentence Murphy in February. Sharp told Murphy his maximum prison term would be 10 years and the highest fine would be $250,000. Murphy was charged with taking more than $5,000 in bribes over five months, ending in April.

The case was in federal court because investigators found Murphy was connected to a person suspected of selling identification documents to illegal immigrants.

Tennessee Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons said Murphy not only broke the law, but also put public safety at risk. Gibbons' department oversees the license centers.
