Clarksville Academy closed due to sickness

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

Clarksville Academy has decided to cancel class for the remainder of the week due to an increased number of students and staff members absent due to illness.

In a letter dated November 6, Head of School Kay Drew said strep throat and influenza has been confirmed in many of the cases.

The decision to cancel classes was made because the illnesses are easily spread.

Clarksville Academy serves grades K through 12 and has about 500 students. As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Drew said 118 students and 14 faculty and staff members were ill.

Head football coach, Todd Hood, told Nashville's News 2 he's worried about a play-off game this Friday, because a third of his team is sick.

"We had to cancel practice today because of that, trying to get them healthy and obviously to prevent the spread of it to other players," said Hood. "It has been trying, I can promise you that, never been in a situation like this before, but I think it's best that we keep everybody as healthy as possible and we'll just see how that goes over the next couple of days."

Lorilee Rager has two children at Clarksville Academy: a kindergartner and a second grader.

"We did flu shots and got our yearly checkups, so everybody is fine in our household, so we're not having any problems or seeing any symptoms," said Rager.

Rager told Nashville's News 2 she is glad the school canceled classes and was prepared for the possibility.

"They started Facebooking and communicating and putting the word out on Saturday, so we were so aware on Monday and Tuesday," added Rager. "I was even looking to clear my schedule in my case my kids did come home with a fever."

Drew said school staff will disinfect the building on Thursday or Friday.

"Hoping everybody will get healthy and get back for Friday's game," said Hood.

The Clarksville Academy Cougars will take on Nashville Christian School in a football playoff game Friday at 7 p.m. in Clarksville, no matter how many students remain sick.

Students are scheduled to return to class on Tuesday, November 13, after a regularly scheduled holiday for Veterans Day on Monday.

"This should serve as adequate time to allow students to recover and break this illness cycle," Drew said.

Parents should email teachers with any questions or concerns relating to assignments and contact coaches with any questions or concerns about practices or games.

The school will provide updates as necessary for parents and faculty on its Web site, ClarksvilleAcademy.com.
