GALLATIN, Tenn. -

Lines were long at polling places across Sumner County.  Voters in Wards 4 and 5 waited more than two hours early Tuesday morning while at Gallatin High School there was an hour-long wait due to equipment issues.

"We had a long line because we had some equipment issues," poll official Virginia Thigpen explained.  "We have gone to an e-poll book system which is a computer, laptop which has all the voters listed in it."

Another poll official told Nashville's News 2 that registrars were still getting familiar with the new system, which caused delays.

Voter Karla Howard waited nearly an hour outside in the cold at ward 5, which held its election at the Hendersonville Church of God on Gallatin Road.

She also voted in 2008.  "From what I remember this is much longer.  It's a longer wait so far just to get in the building," she said.

Thirty-one thousand people in Sumner County voted early but even they stood in line for more than two hours most days.

U.S. Congresswoman Diane Black, who is up for re-election, told Nashville's News 2 she believes there's a much larger turnout than four years ago because there's more interest.

By early afternoon, the lines had shortened to about 30 minutes in Ward 4.

The polls across Tennessee are open until 7 p.m. Thursday.
