Nashville boy scout plans safety fair for parents, children

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Nashville Boy Scout is planning a free child safety fair for the community as part of a service project to become an Eagle Scout.

Daylen Fisher, 12, of Troop 249 enlisted the help of the Nashville Fire Department, Metro police, the Nashville Red Cross and the Tennessee Child Identification Program, or TN CHIP, for the fair.

Scheduled for later this month, the fair will provide life saving information for parents and children.

"Maybe one hour of their life they could learn something that could save their kids life," Fisher told Nashville's News 2.

The main focus of the event will be child identification kits provided by TN CHIP.

The kits will include a photograph, a comprehensive identification questionnaire and a hair sample as well as a finger nail clipping for DNA.

"If the child happened to go missing, the Tennessee child identification kit is something you can hand directly to the police," Fisher continued.

The kits contain vital information parents don't always have readily available.

"It's just sad to me that some people would like to take kids.  It's one of those things as a kid I want other kids to be safe and feel like I do and feel safe," said Fisher.

In addition to the child identification kits, the first few families to participate will receive a free emergency preparedness kit.

Fisher has already accumulated 29 merit badges and hopes to earn the high honor in the Boy Scouts before the age of 13.

The fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 at Norman Binkley Elementary School on West Longdale Drive.
