NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - More than 1.4 million ballots were cast during Tennessee's early voting period.

The turnout, while strong, fell more than 59,000 votes short of the all-time record set in November 2008 presidential election.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Friday that state election officials reported 1,456,824 voters turned out during the period that began Oct. 17 and ended Thursday. He said it was the second-highest early voting total in Tennessee history.

The Legislature this year shortened the early voting period, making it two days shorter than it had been in 2008.

The general election on Tuesday features races for president, U.S. Senate, nine congressional seats, 99 state House seats and 16 state Senate seats.
