Nashville sees increase in homicides over 2011

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Nashville already this year has seen more homicides than it did in all of 2011, but officials are optimistic the numbers are not part of an upward trend.

The Tennessean reports last year saw only 52 homicides in the city, the lowest number in decades. But 2012 has seen 56 so far, including two triple homicide cases involving families.

Mayor Karl Dean said in a statement that even with the upswing, the number of homicides this year is below the trend for the past 10 years.

While he acknowledged that "every homicide is one too many," he said that Nashville remains a safe city.

Detectives have made arrests in at least 31 cases. In two cases the suspect died and one case was ruled self-defense. Twenty-two cases remain open.
