Police investigate after apparent stabbing

Posted: Updated: Oct 28, 2012 07:08 PM
CADIZ, Ky. -

A man under house arrest for previous crimes was arrested Saturday for first-degree assault.

Witnesses said Deonte Byers, 19, of 916 Buffalo Road in Gracey, Kentucky, stabbed Gary Barker Jr. in the abdomen during a fight on Martindale Street.

Barker, 18, of Hopkinsville, told police he was trying to break up the fight when he was stabbed.

When officers from the Cadiz Police Department arrived at Byers' residence, family members told police Byers had stabbed Barker in self-defense.

Byers had injuries to his face and hand consistent with being in a recent fight, reports said.

Byers was placed on house arrest in Trigg County Circuit Court in June 2012 as a condition of bond reduction on charges of complicity to second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault after a February 2012 arrest in Cadiz.

He was wearing his GPS ankle monitor when police arrested him on Saturday.

The Cadiz Police Department is continuing to investigate this case.
