NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Area chefs spent time this week visiting several Metro schools in an effort to educate students of all ages on the benefits of making healthy food choices.
Kevin Dorr is the chef behind "100 Chefs in 100 Schools."
For the last three days, Dorr and fellow chefs have been visiting Metro schools teaching students how to make better food choices.
"It is not just about eating healthy food. It is about making good choices," Dorr said. "It is a big deal because it is going to make you feel better; it is going to make you do better in school, it is going to make maybe your families make better choices at home."
Dorr told Nashville's News 2 he enlists a few student volunteers to help prepare some healthy snack alternatives, such as fruit nachos, during his presentation.
"The recipe was apples, mandarin oranges, yogurt, cranberries and raisins and then a cinnamon chip," seventh grade student Tylisha Sawyers said.
Dareka Hickman, chef at University Medical Center in Lebanon said she believes educating students on healthy foods is an important part of education, as well as showing students healthy alternatives to snacks.
"Any item that they love to eat that is high in fat and carbs it can be changed to something a little bit healthier for them. So they can still get the items that the love but a healthier [version]," she explained.
Many of the chefs also added they hope by taking a little bit of time to teach students about healthy foods will help make a difference in their lives for years to come.
"To not only affect their lives but there little brothers and sisters and families in the end. To live long and feel better and get excited about food again," Dorr said.
Chef Dorr added that he hopes "100 Chefs in 100 Schools" will continue to grow in the future.
