Franklin to save by having trash trucks make more right turns

The city of Franklin plans to save thousands of dollars by having trash trucks make more right-hand turns.

Franklin's Solid Waste Department is proposing a contract with RouteSmart Technologies, Inc. that would provide a routing software package so drivers could do their jobs more efficiently.

City leaders say the technology has many benefits, including mapping the safest routes, is more cost effective and reduces wear and tear on city vehicles, according to Director Becky Caldwell.

"Once a city or community gets to about 10 to 15,000 stops it's very beneficial to have this routing software simply because it's easier than push pins on a map and pencil and paper," said Caldwell.

Caldwell says making more right-hand turns, or fewer left-hand turns, also reduces the chance for crashes.

If city leaders approve the $60,000 contract, drivers in the department will be trained and the program will be up and running by early next year.

"Change is difficult any time you try to make a change but once they get used to it they'll be alright with it," said crew foreman Nate Ridley.

City leaders will vote on the contract next month.
