Car slams into semi-truck in Smith County, 1 dead

SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. -

A serious Smith County accident claimed the life of one man and critically injured a woman.

The accident was reported around 1:15 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 40 eastbound near mile marker 252 at a truck rest stop.

Tennessee Highway Patrol in Cookeville told Nashville's News 2, the driver of a tractor-trailer was sleeping inside the parked truck when he was awakened by a jolt.

He told officials when he exited the truck, he saw chaos and Hyundai car parts everywhere.

Officials said a male passenger died at the scene, while the female driver was flown by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

THP officials said it was not immediately clear why the driver of the Hyundai drove into the truck.

The victims' names were not immediately released.

Eastbound traffic was affected with the right lane blocked.

The scene was cleared by 5:30 a.m.
