MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

For most MTSU students, the challenges of college fall into categories like studying for exams, picking a major and finding friends.

But for some, it comes to down to finding the most basic things: food.

"It may not look like it, but I think a lot of people do have that issue, trying to get themselves through school," said Caroline Darnell, an MTSU student.

There's now an MTSU student food pantry for people who may need help.

"A lot of our students have the financial means to come to campus and to be a student, they just don't have the means to support themselves," said Becca Seul, an MTSU academic advisor who opened the pantry about a month ago in the McFarland building on campus.

Right now, the pantry is housed in a closet at the end of a hallway.

Seul said the idea started when Seul says she heard from students struggling.

"I actually had a student come in and he had moved in early this summer, so he was here by himself," Seul told Nashville's News 2, "He was one of our foster care students who was hungry and needed food."

Officially, 67 MTSU students are classified as homeless and about 80 more come from the foster care system, according to Seul.

Seul said for a student to be considered homeless, she personally verifies where they are living and gets references and letters of support.

"A lot of our students are sleeping on friends' couches," explained Seul, "Some of them are living in their cars, we try to avoid that. Most are staying with friends or non family members temporarily, until they can get back on their feet."

In an effort to keep the pantry stocked, the Student Government Association (SGA) on campus is organizing a food drive until the end of October and Seul said she hopes other groups get involved so eventually, the pantry can expand.

"Going into the holidays we know it's going to be a larger need that we keep the pantry stocked with as much as we can," said Seul.
