LOS ANGELES -

Injuries, wardrobe malfunctions and illness: It all happened on "Dancing with the Stars" Monday night.

Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd danced a Bollywood-inspired number getting a near perfect score, 39.5 out of 40, and earning the first 10s of the season.

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough tied for first with a mesmerizing mambo and Johnson did it without knowing something that could have made the dance a disaster.

"If you look at the shoe, the heel looks normal but if you look at this shoe, the heel is broke!" Johnson exclaimed.

Kelly Monaco danced with a broken toe and the flu but she and partner Val Chmekovskiy still came in third with 37.5 points.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani came in a half point behind them in fourth place.

"It puts us in the middle of the pack which is shocking, you know, to be three points off a perfect score and you're in the middle of the pack," Rycroft said.

They're in good company.

"The race is not over and it's not given to the swift or the strong, it's to the one who endures 'til the end so at the end of the day, we in the middles of the pack," said Emmitt Smith who with partner Cheryl Burke received a 36 for the night. [It] doesn't mean that we dead last.  It means that we still in the hunt."

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas and Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy finished in the bottom two.

"That's the slow steady climb, you know, hopefully if we make it but either way, if we don't make it, we did our best dance this season," Ballas said.

Tuesday's results show airs live on Nashville's News 2 at 7 p.m.
