The Putnam County Commission voted unanimously Monday night to allow the phrase "In God we Trust" to hang over the county courthouse.
Commissioner Steve Pierce told Nashville's News 2 work will now begin on a suitable design plan to put up the phrase.
The idea originated with Colonial View Baptist Church Pastor Al Gaspard.
Gaspard said taxpayers will not foot the bill and he hopes to raise enough money to pay for the added signage.
In November of 2011 the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution reaffirming "In God We Trust" as the official national motto of the United States.
Putnam County attorney Jeffrey Jones said the resolution also supports and encourages the phrase publicly in all public buildings, public schools and government institutions.
