NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Investigators are trying to determine what caused an apartment building to catch fire in south Nashville early Sunday morning.

The blaze started at Weatherly Ridge Apartments around 1:30 a.m.

The fire was burning fast when firefighters arrived, but they were able to get it under control quickly.

The smell of smoke awoke resident Wolimata Diouf.  Moments later she heard someone knocking on her door.

"Some guy came and banged on people's doors and told us to get out because it was a fire. So I just grabbed my sweater and I ran out," said Diouf.

Diouf watched as flames overtook the units right next door to hers.

"When the fireman opened the door it was a lot of smoke coming from my house.  I was scared. I thought it would catch on fire but thank God it was just smoke," said Diouf.

According to management, four units were damaged, displacing 14 residents.  The Red Cross placed eight residents in a local hotel.  The other residents are staying with relatives.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
