NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
During a news conference on Friday, the State Health Department said an additional 111 people who received epidural steroid injections were notified of the meningitis outbreak.
According to Dr. John Dreyzehner, the Department of Health has learned about an additional shipment in early June of the steroids made by the New England Compounding Center to Tennessee.
He said that they do not yet know the lot number, but they believe that shipment is different from the three lots recalled by a Massachusetts specialty pharmacy.
As of Friday afternoon, there were a total of 184 reported cases of meningitis in 12 states including Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina among others.
There have been 50 reported cases of fungal meningitis cases in Tennessee and at least six deaths. Nationwide 14 people have died of the rare disorder since September.
This form of meningitis is not contagious and symptoms include fever, new or worsening headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, increasing pain, and redness or swelling of the injection site.
Tennesseans with questions about the outbreak are urged to contact the Tennessee Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
