SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -
With no credible leads on the whereabouts of two children missing following a house fire last month in Bedford County, investigators have returned to the scene of the fire to further look for evidence the children died in the blaze.
Family and friends have created a small memorial at the end of the driveway of the home where Albert and Mollie McClaran lived. The house caught fire on the night of September 23 and the couple died.
The McClaran's grandchildren, Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel, lived in the same home and were there on September 23.
At first, investigators thought they also died in the fire but after several days of searching, investigators were unable to find the children's bodies or evidence they perished in the blaze and an Amber Alert was issued.
Now, three weeks later, with no credible leads or motivation for the children's disappearance, investigators have returned to the scene and are once again combing through the rubble.
Using shovels, rakes, shifters and their hands, ATF investigators joined the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday but nothing was immediately found.
In nearby Shelbyville, flyers with the children's faces are scattered around town and some residents remain hopeful the children will be found alive.
"We all hope so. We all hope the kids get a safe return," Deanna McFarland said.
"Hopefully right now whoever has got them, I hope they learn we are after them," added Paul Nelson.
Others believe the children did die in the fire.
William Lewis told News 2, "That is terrible about kids dying today. They don't get to live their life out and experience what is happing in life."
"People come up missing and we don't know what happen, we are all wondering," said Mike Overcast.
The state fire marshal still has not determined what started the Kingdom Road house fire.
An official cause of death has also not been released for the McClarans.
The Amber Alert for Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel remains active.
