West Nile claims life of 70-year-old Nashville man

A 70-year-old Nashville man has become the first victim of West Nile virus in Davidson County, health officials announced Tuesday morning.

The man's illness was reported last week as the first human case of West Nile in Davidson County this year.

Health officials said the man had underlying medical conditions although did not release anything further.

Reports of West Nile virus cases have been rare in Davidson County. There were no human cases reported in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and only a total of seven cases over the last 10 years.

Experts say the mosquitoes that are known to carry West Nile are more active at dusk and nighttime hours.

This year, the virus has been confirmed in batches of mosquitoes in Antioch, Goodlettsville, Hermitage, Madison and north and south Nashville.
