MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

Crews responded to a roof fire at Rutland Elementary School in Mt. Juliet Thursday morning.

The incident was reported just before 6:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of South Rutland Road.

Fire officials told Nashville's News 2 someone spotted smoke coming from the roof of the school and called 911.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the building. When they got onto the roof they discovered an area about five feet in diameter on fire.

They were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

Officials said a roofing company has been working at the school and a tar heater they were using in construction was the cause of the blaze.

The company came to the school to remove the heater and was working with fire officials to ensure the fire would not rekindle.

School officials told Nashville's News 2 the school is currently in fall break and activities scheduled for the day would not be impacted.
