NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A four-year-old girl remains in critical but stable condition after the pickup truck she was riding in crashed head-on into a tree Sunday evening in the Forest Hills area.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Old Hickory Boulevard and Granny White Pike.

Police said the child's mother, 34-year-old Gina Elkins, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on Old Hickory Boulevard when she left the roadway and collided with the tree.

Elkins was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Her daughter, Addlyn Elkins, who was seat-belted in a booster seat behind the driver, was also transported to Vanderbilt where she was listed in critical condition.

Gina Elkins told police she was unfamiliar with the pickup truck and she drove off the roadway as she was attempting to locate controls for the windshield wipers.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.
