Virginia family helps boy battling cancer with Christmas spirit

RUSTBURG, Va. -

A Virginia family is celebrating Christmas early to help a young boy battle a deadly disease.

With hope in their hearts, they're celebrating the holiday season early and are spreading holiday cheer to many others.

According to Virginia station WSET-TV, Nathan Norman was diagnosed with brain cancer in January 2009 when he was just a year old.

As the cancer progressed, Nathan developed a tumor on his spine. Surgery and chemotherapy have been unsuccessful.

Recent scans have shown his cancer is progressing rapidly.

Knowing what he's up against, the five-year-old said the one thing that would make him happy is an early Christmas.

Dawn Norman, Nathan's mother, explained, "Nathan had asked when we got home if we would put up our Christmas tree and our lights. He thought that would make him feel better because he didn't feel good."

In honor of Nathan's fight, the neighborhood has joined in the spirit of Christmas with decorations, lights and cookies. Neighbors have put lights and decorations outside of their homes and invited Nathan inside to help decorate their trees.

One neighbor explained that they're all in it together.

"We've pretty much walked this journey with them since the beginning, so it was never really a question of if we were going to do it," said Scott Sears, "and when he asks for it to be Christmas in the middle of September, you just do it."

Aware of the fight ahead, they plan on celebrating Christmas with Nathan on December 25, hoping an early Christmas gift, and a neighborhood behind him, will get him there.
