MT. JULIET, Tenn. -
A student at West Elementary School in Mt. Juliet has died following a brief illness.
Sam McLeod, 9, died Friday morning at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
In a statement, Mickey Hall, Deputy Director of Wilson County Schools, said, "It saddens me to inform you that one of our students has died after a brief illness. We have been in contact with the CDC and there is no health risk to anyone at school and there is no need for preventative medication to those that have been in contact with the student. Rest assured that all measures have been taken by the school system to maintain safety for all students."
Health officials said McLeod died from a non-contagious form of bacterial meningitis.
