NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro police said a man shot and killed his uncle during a family dispute late Thursday evening.

The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. in the 400 block of Mallory Street in south Nashville.

Police said the victim, 55-year-old James Ridley, Jr., was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the chest where he was pronounced dead.

According to a news release, Leondra Ridley, 31, told police a struggle occurred and he shot his uncle in self-defense. Police said he cooperated during an interview with investigators.

Authorities told Nashville's News 2 several family members were at the home at the time of the incident, including three children ages, 4, 6, and 7.

Ridley told investigators he was called to the home by family members when his uncle, James Ridley, Jr. showed up acting violent and appeared to be intoxicated.

Ridley said the three children were hiding in the closet with their mother due to fear of Ridley Jr.

No charges were immediately filed.

The investigation is ongoing.
