Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey capped an amazing season with his 20th victory Thursday as the Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5.
Dickey struck out a career best 13 hitters on his way to being the first knuckleballer to win 20 games since Joe Niekro in 1980.
The 37-year-old Nashville native had never won more than 11 games in any previous season. He allowed three runs in 7 2-3 innings. He also leads the NL with 222 strikeouts.
Dickey is also the Mets first 20 game winner since Frank Viola 22 years ago.
