MONTEREY, Tenn. -

A Monterey man is behind bars in Overton County charged in the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old man.

Deputies with the Overton County Sheriff's Department arrested Travis Melton, 34, for the murder of Donnie Tayes during the early morning hours on Monday.

Tayes' body was discovered in the backyard of Melton's home located on Hanging Limb Highway in Monterey, just east of Cookeville.

A motive was not immediately known although investigators said the shooting could have stemmed from a domestic dispute between Tayes and his wife, the Overton County News first reported.

According to the arrest warrant, Melton confessed to shooting Tayes one time with a .243 rifle.

Tayes was shot in the back and died at the scene.

Melton was charged with first degree murder and booked into the Overton County jail without bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
