Redevelopment plan aims to transform Midtown

Posted:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A growing area of Nashville known as Midtown could soon see some major transformations.

The Metro Council could give final approval of a redevelopment plan Tuesday evening.

The Midtown area is bounded by Interstate 440 to the west and Interstate 40 to the east.  Broadway, West End, 21st and Charlotte avenues mark the north and south borders.

The plan would rezone the area to allow higher developments closer to streets, creating a more urban feeling, and make the area more pedestrian and mass-transit friendly.

The plan would also support a proposed rapid bus transit line aimed to link the neighborhoods of Five Points in east Nashville to Harding Pike at White Bridge Road west of town.

Some are concerned the Midtown plan is moving too quickly without enough study on traffic and preservation of historic buildings.

The zoning plan is up for a third and final vote Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
