Naturalization ceremony comes to MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Middle Tennessee State University is celebrating Constitution Day by hosting a naturalization ceremony for 300 new citizens, including two MTSU students.

Constitution Day was established by Congress in 2004 to celebrate the anniversary of the document's signing.

Mary Evins is associate professor of history and coordinator of MTSU's American Democracy Project. She said that every year since, the university has marked the day with special events focused on civic learning.

Evins said the school has aspired for years to bring a naturalization ceremony to campus. Middle Tennessee citizens usually are naturalized at the U.S. District Court in Nashville.

The public is encouraged to attend the Monday ceremony and welcome the new citizens. It also will be streamed over the Internet. More information is available online at
