A mother turned herself into authorities early Monday morning after she abandoned her 16-year-old son in Clarksville on Sunday. According to police, Cheryl Simpson left her son at a business in the 2500 block of Wilma Rudolph Boulevard around 7:45 p.m. The minor reported to police he had traveled from Alabama to Clarksville with his mother to visit her boyfriend. The teen also told police his mother had been drinking as she drove and that she rear-ended a vehicle on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard before fleeing the scene. The boy said he told his mom to pull the vehicle over multiple times, but she refused. When Simpson, 42, slowed for a red-light at Forest Hills Road, he was able to exit the vehicle. Simpson reportedly yelled for her son to get back in the vehicle but he refused to do so. Simpson is said to have gotten back on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard, leaving her son behind. Officers were able to get in contact with her around 11:30 p.m. She told police she was in Alabama, but she would be back to get her son at an unknown date or time. Simpson is charged with child abuse, neglect, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident. She has since been released on a $30,000 bond.
