Funeral director pleads guilty to stealing thousands of dollars

COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

A funeral director from Columbia pled guilty to stealing almost $10,000 given to him as payment for funeral services.

Carl Points, the funeral director at Williamson Memorial in Franklin, was accused of taking $9,900 for pre-need funeral arrangements in 2009, the Columbia Daily-Herald reports. Points was then employed by Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

The Daily-Herald said a trial was supposed to begin Tuesday. The Assistant District Attorney however said the prosecution and defense reached a plea agreement for Points to serve a two-year post-plea diversion period.

Along with the agreement, Points must also pay back the $9,900 to the Williams Funeral Home.

The investigation into missing funds did not being until 2011, when Points was indicted by a Maury County grand jury.

The newspaper reported that Points' supervisors asked him if the family had ever paid for the funeral arrangements. Points said the family was unable to because of hardships
