Doctors warn parents of dangers involving lawnmowers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Doctors at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital are warning parents of dangers involving lawnmowers after treating three kids with serious injuries in the emergency room this week.

All three children are under the age of 10 and were either riding on the lawnmower with a parent or playing in the yard while the parent was cutting grass.

One of the kids, an eight-year-old boy, was so severely injured he had to have his foot amputated.

Doctors say these types of injuries are not uncommon.

"We've had grandparents accidentally run over grandchildren, same for fathers and mothers," said Dr. Thomas Abramo.

The injuries can be traumatic, physically and psychologically, for both parent and child.

"They are very devastated, very devastated. It's always like they were just in my arms and two seconds later they fell or I didn't even know they were back there when I backed the lawnmower up or I thought they were in the house. These are the sort of things they say," said Dr. Abramo.

Doctors say accidents can happen fast and parents should make sure kids are indoors while they are cutting the grass.
