On Monday night, city commissioners in Mt. Juliet unanimously voted to reinstate a city fire department. Since 1986 the city, which is made up of 25,000 residents, has relied on and been protected by county emergency workers. According to officials, Mt. Juliet relies on just one fire station, two engines, one ambulance and four firefighters per shift from the county. "Currently, we're not able to meet the minimum standards to get the correct amount of responders to the scene without calling on stations from all over the county," Vice Mayor James Maness explained. Under a new proposed plan for a city fire department, those limited resources could be nearly quadrupled by 2016 with 14 responders. City officials told Nashville's News 2 taxpayers will not be forced to pay higher taxes since the money will come from a revenue stream already in place designated for emergency services. The ordinance to reinstate the city fire department must now pass a second reading before moving forward.
