COLUMBIA, Tenn. -

A man is dead after forcing his way into a home early Wednesday morning in Columbia.

Columbia police said Thomas Moore entered a home located at 1503 Highland Avenue around 4:20 a.m. and reportedly began assaulting Terrance Hill.

During the assault, the home's resident, Prudence Spencer, grabbed a gun and opened fire in Hill's defense.

Moore was shot and died at the scene.

"This man broke into her house this morning and beat up her friend and she tried to make him stop and that was the only way she could make him stop. I don't think she tried to kill him," friend Brandy Humphrey said.

Hill was transported to Maury Regional Hospital for non life-threatening injuries received during the altercation.  Spencer was uninjured.

Police said Spencer and Hill knew Moore but the exact nature of their relationship was not immediately clear.

"My friend is ok, as ok as she can be," Humphrey said. "She's pretty shook up."

The investigation is ongoing.

Police said that Moore has a long criminal history and had been previously charged for aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, simple assault and domestic assault.

No charges were immediately filed.
