CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
A Clarksville man is facing multiple charges, including a felony, after police said he got into a car chase with his estranged wife over the weekend.
According to the Clarksville police incident report, Tommie Gatewood spotted his wife driving on Riverside Drive around 1 p.m. Saturday.
Police told Nashville's News 2 Gatewood has a history of domestic assault and a court previously ordered him not to contact her.
Officials explained that the couple is getting a divorce.
Officer Scott Thompson said he saw Gatewood make a U-turn and start to follow his wife.
Officer Thompson wrote in his report, "[Gatewood] followed her right on her bumper and she sped up to get away from him."
At times, police said speeds reached 70 miles-per-hour and when Gatewood's wife turned onto Spring Street and then onto Beaumont Street, Gatewood drove beside her in the oncoming lane and tailgated her.
Police charged Gatewood with felony reckless endangerment, violating his condition of release and making harassing phone calls.
He was booked into the Montgomery County jail on a $2,500 bond.
Gatewood's estranged wife was uninjured in the incident, police said.
