A Madison woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car Friday night.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on East Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison.
A 2004 Dodge Stratus being driven by Mark Hunt, 53, collided with 52-year-old Joanne Stauffer, who was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Stauffer was crossing the street with her four-year-old daughter, who could've followed her into the street, police said. The daughter was found with Hunt and his passenger, who waited for police to arrive.
Hunt told police that Stauffer suddenly appeared in front of him and he could not avoid hitting her.
In a release, police said that neither speed nor alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the collision.
Officers said the area was dimly lit, and Stauffer was wearing dark clothing, making it difficult for drivers to see her.
No charges were filed against Hunt.
