An elderly Nashville woman died after falling down an escalator at an area grocery store Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. at the Harris Teeter located at 4416 Ridgefield Way in Belle Meade.
Officials told Nashville's News 2 Martha Short inadvertently placed her shopping cart on the pedestrian escalator as she was leaving the store's main level and going down to the parking garage.
Police reported the cart rolled forward, causing the 83-year-old woman to fall to the bottom of the escalator.
The store has an escalator designed for carts-only that runs between the up and down pedestrian escalators.
Short was transported to an area hospital where she later died.
In a statement released Thursday evening, the grocery store chain said, "Harris Teeter deeply regrets the incident that took place at its Belle Meade store and would like to express its condolences to family and friends also affected. We work very hard to maintain a safe store environment for both our customers and our associates, and the news of what happened today is extremely upsetting."
